The 1986 Shell Oilers season is the 2nd season of the franchise in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA). known as Shell Helix in the All-Filipino and Formula Shell in the Open Conference.
Notable occurrences
- Following Shell's loss to Ginebra, 113-106 on the 2nd day of the Reinforced semifinals on May 15, which dropped their record to 3 win- 9 loss, Head Coach Freddie Webb resigns from his position, taking over his place is another former mentor Ed Ocampo.
- On November 16, last day of the quarterfinals, with Shell needing to win and hope that Great Taste losses later that night to arrange a playoff for the last semis berth, the Spark Aiders had a large lead over already-qualified Tanduay Rhum late in the 2nd Quarter, when Shell import Dexter Shouse' powerful dunk cause the ULTRA North goal to mis-aligned, the game was delayed as it took almost 1/2 hours for the workers to fix it, Formula Shell registered the 2nd largest winning margin of 54 points in a 154–100 victory, but the Great Taste Coffeemakers qualified in the semis with a win over Alaska in the second game.
Key Dates
- July 6: defeated Manila Beer, 84-83 in the Opening game of the All-Filipino Conference.
- August 5: reach the semifinals of the All-Filipino by repeating over Manila Beer, 98-79.
- September 23: spoiled the return of the comebacking PBA team, now known as Magnolia Cheese, with Shell winning 111–95 in the first game of the season-ending Third (Open) Conference.
- October 19: Import Fred Reynolds held down Ginebra's high-scoring import Michael Hackett to a personal low 16 points as Formula Shell handed the Ginebras their 2nd loss, 109–105, at the start of the second round of eliminations.
